WINTERIZE:
an adaptation of Franz Schubert's Winterreise
for baritone and transistor radios
...brave and, in all senses, chilling... You have not truly experienced “Winterreise” until you have stood three or four feet from the singer, his breath visible in the cold.
-- Zachary Woolfe, The New York Times
Winterize is my outdoor adaptation of Franz Schubert's Winterreise, reimagined for baritone and transistor radios. Created in collaboration with Make Music New York and director JJ Hudson, the performance leads the audience through an outdoor route that enhances the sequence of Schubert’s iconic song cycle. While I perform, the audience accompanies me with hand-held transistor radios that amplify the piano part, played by Timothy Long, and soundscaped by Jonathan Zalben.
The result: an event that transforms a pillar of classical music into a visceral participatory experience.
I have performed Winterize in the following locations:
Brooklyn Botanic Garden in participation with Make Music Winter
Park an der Ilm, Weimar in participation with Thüringer Bachwochen
Saratoga Spa State Park in participation with Opera Saratoga
Snug Harbor Cultural Center in participation with Make Music Winter
Downtown Annapolis in participation with Live Arts Maryland
